Candy Dash Postmortem

Well where do I begin with this one?

I thoroughly enjoyed making this game, I think the biggest reason why I enjoyed it so much is that it is all mine! I created the game from scratch and used my latest philosophy, "Stick with what I know". I created the game with no help from tutorials or using code from tutorials, I think that is why it made me feel so good when I finished the game. The only help I looked up was the help manual for GameMaker. I had attempted to create arrays by myself, though I still don't fully understand them, I managed to get one to work for me. That in itself was an accomplishment for me.

The art style was something i had pondered for quite some time, I usually stick with pixel art but I decided to try my hand and drawing in Paint.NET. I'll be the first to admit, I am no artist, but I felt warm and fuzzy inside after creating my assets so that's got to account for something. I think with future smaller updates to the game I can keep practicing my art style, there's a few changes I would love to make in the future when I have the time.

The coding aspect of the game, aside from arrays, made me feel good. It's like over the last 2 years of on and off game making has actually taught me something. I can imagine though, future me will open this game, take a look at the game code, and scream internally, but that's a future me problem. I'll admit though I started coding rather late in life at 25 years old, learning it felt like I was back in school again, honestly some days I ask myself "Is it too late to catch up to other people?" but I realize there is probably other people who are in the same boat. To those people, I say stick with it.

This leads me to the last point in the postmortem, SOUNDS! Nothing makes you feel like you're back in band class like playing around with Boscel Coil. I mean that in a sense that I probably should have paid more attention in band class, but I managed to slap something together. Other projects where I've tried to create music I usually end up re-writing it multiple times and still wouldn't be happy with it. This time I went in and decided to put something together and hope for the best. Of course I may end up in the future change the music as well, who knows?

This brings me to the conclusion, overall, I am happy with how this game turned out. I am excited to try my hand and future game jams as well to create something just as good or even better. For now I will settle on this small victory.
